Kingdom warfare (A)
We are at war
As believers and citizens of the Kingdom of God we are at war with Satan’s kingdom. As followers and soldiers of Jesus, we need to know our enemy.
Who is Satan and how did he acquire his power?
Satan is a fallen angel, who wanted to be God and rebelled against God in Heaven (Ezekiel 28:15, Isaiah 14:12-17). Satan was thrown out of Heaven on the Earth. One-third of the angels followed Satan. He has a ‘kingdom’ (Matthew 25). Satan tempted the first human couple, Adam and Eve, to sin against God (Genesis 3:16-19, Romans 5:12). Adam and Eve obeyed Satan rather than God. This act of disobedience to God resulted in the sinful nature of mankind and gave Satan power over mankind. Since then, Satan is the enemy of God’s people, Christians.
Question 1
How many angels are still at God’s side?

Question 2
Notice the number of Christians on earth. Are Christians fighting on own territory or on the enemy’s territory?

Names of Satan, the devil
Accuser (Revelation 12:10)
Tempter (Matthew 4:3)
Liar (John 8:44)
Murderer (John 8:44)
Serpent (Genesis 3:1)
Angel of light, deceiver (2 Cor. 11:14)
The evil one (1 John 2:14)
The Dragon (Revelation 20:2)
Adversary, devil, enemy (1 Peter 5:8)
Jesus said to the religious Jewish leaders in John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Question 3
What are Satan’s characteristics in Jesus’ own words?

Question 4
Which of them are most scary and why?
Satan shows himself falsely as an angel of light. He imitates God and the holy trinity. See below how Satan has setup his evil trinity, also called the unholy trinity, as it will show up in the tribulation period described in Revelation 6 through 19. In the images below, the red figures are persons of flesh and blood.

Jesus Himself needed to withstand the false temptations of the devil when He was tempted in the desert, right after He had started His ministry on earth. Read Luke 4:1-13
Question 5
Which typical falsehoods of Satan come in sight here?

Jesus gave us an example prayer, called The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 9 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.
Question 6
Discuss which part of the Lord’s Prayer focuses on
- Our present time
- Our worship of God
- God’s providing power, now
- Our request for forgiveness
- Our fight against the devil
- Our future time; Millennial Kingdom on earth (verse 10); see Revelation 20:1-6.

Instructions
In 1 Peter 5:5-9 we read how we, as believers in the church, should act: 5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
