Study and discussion
Difficult words:
Gentiles: Non-Jews.
Pilate: Roman governor in Jerusalem.
Kingdom of God: Wherever God’s King (Jesus) rules over God’s people. Not a geographical kingdom.
In the last session we saw that Jesus died to rescue us from sin, by taking the punishment we deserve. In this session we will see what Mark tells us about why Jesus rose from the dead.

The following Bible passages are mentioned in the teaching video:
Mark 8:31 (Jesus announces His resurrection)
Mark 9:31 (Jesus announces His resurrection)
Mark 10:32-34 (Jesus announces His resurrection)
Mark 14:72 (Jesus predicts Peter’s disowning)
Mark 15:42-47 (Jesus’ burrial)

Read Mark 14:27-31
27“You will all fall away,”, Jesus told them, “for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.” 30“Truly I tell you,”Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.” 31But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Question 1
In this section Jesus is speaking to his disciples. What predictions did Jesus make? (See Mark 14:27, 28 and 30)
Question 2
In what ways does Peter disagree with Jesus’ predictions? (See Mark 14:29, 31)
Question 3
In Mark 14:27 Jesus quoted from the Old Testament (Zechariah 13:7) to explain what he was about to suffer, and why the disciples would scatter. How do we know that Jesus fully intended to gather the “sheep” who would be scattered by his death? (See Mark 14:28 and Mark 16:6-7.)
Question 4
Which of Jesus’ predictions did Peter pay attention to? Which did he ignore?
Question 5
Jesus had spoken plainly and repeatedly about his resurrection from the death. (See Mark 8:31, 9:30-31, 10:32-34) Did the disciples understand what this meant? If not, why didn’t they ask Jesus about it? (See Mark 9:32.)
Question 6
Jesus repeatedly claimed that he would be raised to life on the third day after his death. What happened? (Mark 16). Verse 6 says “He has risen!” All prophesies about the Jesus’ resurrection fulfilled.
When you believe this fulfilled prophecy, do you also believe all other prophesies in the Bible, also when they are still to be fulfilled in the future?
Question 7
“For God has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead” (Acts 17:31).
What’s your reaction to this?
Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17
13Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
